The Ripple Effect: The Fate of Freshwater in the Twenty-First Century, Alex Prud’Homme
I was riveted by section one, but later the density of the content and the gravity of the message became overwhelming and I had to slow down. As someone who takes military showers and gets cranky about leaky faucets or roommates who seem to flush toilets incessantly, I was immediately drawn to the topic but had no idea how much I still had to learn.
The book covers everything from the infrastructure required to purify and treat water, climate change and the implications of impending severe drought and flood patterns, hydrofracking, privatization, desalinization, fishing and agriculture, the value of water both literally and figuratively, the implications of preference for packaging and convenience that require massive amounts of water for production and transport… He just about covers it all. Like I said, dense at points, but incredibly enlightening. And terrifying.

I am genuinely interested in this stuff, reblogging for a reminder to check this out.
